What Are Asphalt Millings?

Once old asphalt has run its course, not many people realize that it can take on a new life by being recycled. Asphalt millings are the product of taking old asphalt and crushing it down into pieces, comparable in size to gravel. A milling machine grinds up asphalt to a predetermined depth and then vacuums up the milled material. The remaining lower layers are usually still durable and strong, leaving a good foundation for repaving. Meanwhile, the milled asphalt is taken away, ready to be used in new projects.

Doing What Gravel Can’t

The clear advantage of using millings is that you’re using a recycled material. Discarded asphalt can often end up in landfills where it takes up considerable space, but asphalt millings repurpose old material and give it a second life. Apart from the eco-friendly implications, there are also other reasons to be using asphalt millings over gravel.

Cost: The recycling of old material costs significantly less than the creation of new material. Labor and transport costs are also lower.

Durability: All forms of recycled asphalt, including asphalt millings, hold up well under harsh conditions like heavy rain and snowfall..

Maintenance: Forget about time-consuming upkeep. Once you pave with millings, sealcoating and resurfacing aren’t necessary. They actually harden and form stronger bonds over time, and they produce less dust and dirt than gravel.

Seasonality: Asphalt millings hold up equally well in hold and cold environments. Snow melts away quickly, and ice has a difficult time forming.
